Mainland China: Guangzhou...

My first venture into mainland China was Guangzhou, or Canton as it used to be known.

Cute old(ish) lanes abound...

But there's a ton of construction everywhere, tearing down old neighborhoods to build gigantic new towers (as per below). If you take the train between cities, there are quite literally forests of huge skyscrapers going up, seemingly, in the middle of the countryside. This has all the markings of a real estate bubble if you ask me...

Old tower

Possibly the most unappealing food poster I've ever seen... Pigeons coming straight from the feeding cage to your oven! Bon appetit everyone...

Everyone Chinese city needs a big tower. It's a status thing. You're just a tier 2, provincial city otherwise...

Spanking new art museum. And free entry also...

My "take home" piece from the museum.

Guangzhou got itself a brand new skyline.
